The Journey

The Heart Behind the Lore
The phone rang just as we sat down to lunch after the interment ceremony. "We have a room available at the end of the month in the new wing at Seaside Residential Aged Care."
One month. My heart raced. One month to pack up the house.
Life's most profound journeys often begin with an unexpected deadline. Mine started with what seemed like a simple mission: clear my parents' home in just four weeks. But as I began sorting through decades of belongings, each object revealed hidden stories that forced me to confront memory, identity, and what it means to preserve—or let go—of a legacy.
Stepping into a Time Capsule
As I crossed the threshold, I was struck by the weight of absence. Heavy silence hung in the rooms. Shelves that had borne well-thumbed books stood empty. Drawers overflowed with forgotten mementos and letters.
With the house needing to be readied for sale, time was of the essence.
But as I began to sift through these objects, I realised this was more than logistics. It was a journey into the heart of my family's legacy—and into the complex landscape of family dynamics that often remain unspoken.

Embedded in Craftsmanship
Each item I touched held not just its own story, but a piece of my family's collective history.
An old gardening journal spoke of a love for nurturing life. Antique crochet hooks, worn smooth by decades of use, testified to the artistry and resourcefulness of the women who came before me. My stepfather's old tools, worn smooth from years of use but now gathering dust, whispered of craftsmanship in an age of disposability.
Each decision about what to keep and what to let go felt weighted with significance—not just of material worth, but of emotional consequence.
What stories did I want to preserve? What memories were too precious to lose? How do we honour the stories embedded in these belongings while avoiding becoming prisoners to inherited clutter? What do we risk losing if we discard too hastily?
Patterns of Meaning
As I sifted through these artifacts, patterns emerged. Family stories are rarely linear. Some objects felt like bridges between us, others like barriers.
These objects reminded me that some contributions are recorded not in ledgers, but in countless unrecorded moments of love, sacrifice, and resilience. The values that shaped my ancestors' lives—hard work, integrity, compassion—were the same ones they sought to instill in their children and grandchildren.
The process became a profound act of curation—not just of objects, but of narratives. No longer just managing an estate, I was becoming a steward of stories. Some celebrated, some complicated, all fundamentally human.

Curation as Healing
In the quiet moments, as I ran my fingers over the padded satin stitches of an antique tablecloth, or followed delicate crochet borders made with impossibly fine hooks, the deeper themes emerged.
These objects were more than memories—they were conversations across generations, holding both beauty and complexity. They held stories of our collective histories, our technologies, our innovations, our migrations, our suffering and loss, and our endurance and resilience.
Curation, I discovered, is an act of healing. In learning to let go, we free ourselves from inherited burdens. In choosing what to preserve, we shape our own narrative. Healing is not about erasing the past, but about understanding it.
An Invitation
Heart's Lore Stories is an invitation into this rich, complex landscape—where objects are more than things, they are storytellers.
Each artifact in this collection carries a fragment of a larger story—one that includes joy and challenge, connection and distance, love in all its nuanced forms. They are witnesses to lives lived with intention, creativity, and resilience.
As I continue on this journey of discovery, I invite you to join me. Together, let's unearth the tales tucked away in forgotten corners, the narratives woven into crafted objects, the connections that transcend time and circumstance.
Our story is still unfolding, one cherished artifact at a time.
